Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced, non-invasive eye scan that provides detailed images of the layers of your retina, that is, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye.

This cutting-edge technology helps detect early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, often before symptoms appear.

The scan is quick, comfortable and offers valuable insights into your eye health. Our friendly team is here to guide you through the process and ensure your vision remains clear and protected for the future.

OCT explained

OCT uses light-wave technology to capture detailed, cross-sectional images of the layers of your retina. Similar to an ultrasound scan, but using light instead of sound, OCT measures how light reflects off the tissues in your eye to create 3D images.

This advanced eye diagnostic technology allows us to detect even the tiniest changes in your eye health. Plus, as we know our patients rely on us to provide the latest optical technologies, we have invested in the Topcom Maestro2, which provides both widefield OCT imaging and fundus photography that images your retina as well as the blood vessels that supply it

Results from your OCT eye exam are available instantly and kept on file so our optometrist can compare the images each time you come for an eye exam. This means they can spot any changes in your retina that could be a sign of eye disease.

Benefits of OCT

As we already mentioned, OCT is instrumental in detecting eye conditions in the earliest stages. By catching issues early, treatment can be more effective, potentially preventing vision loss.

The scan only takes 5 minutes, is painless and offers a deeper insight into your eye health compared to standard tests.

It can be instrumental in glaucoma detection, as well as diagnosing other sight-threatening eye conditions. That’s why we consider an OCT scan an important part of your regular eye exams.

What’s more, if your optometrist spots any changes in your eye and refers you to an ophthalmologist (a doctor specialising in treating the eye), your OCT scan results can be especially helpful.

Who should have an OCT scan?

We recommend anyone aged 30 and over to include an OCT scan as part of their advanced eye exam every 2 years. That’s because the risk of glaucoma and macular degeneration increases with age. OCT is, therefore, a proactive step towards preserving your vision.

If you have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma, you should consider having annual OCT scans to monitor your eye health.
